“Gion Shoujya” is the first and most famous chapter of Heike Monogatari. (The Tale of the Heike)

At the Jetavana Vihara (or Gion Shoujya in Japanese) glass and silver bells were hung at the four corners of the temple infirmary. These bells were rung once a discipline died. The sound of these bells that accompanied the passing of an individual were always the same, no matter how great or renown they were in society. Just as the same death comes to all men despite their worldly achievements.
