Yasuke – Then Giant African Samurai of Oda Nobunaga
Episode 1: Introduction
Yasuke was the Mozambican Samurai who served Oda Nobunaga, the most powerful Japanese Warlord during the Sengoku period of Japan.
Yasuke was the first and only African to become a Japanese samurai.
The Samurai was an elite class of warriors who served the Japanese feudal lords.
As a servant and bodyguard of the Jesuit Inspector, Alessandro Valignano, Yasuke learned Japanese and traveled with the Jesuit to Japan.
Nobunaga took an interest because Yasuke was naturally black and was a giant at 1.88 meters tall.
He entered Nobunaga’s service as a Samurai and Nobunaga’s weapon bearer in 1579.
He was with Nobunaga at the Honno Temple in 1582 when Akechi Mitsuhide rebelled and forced Nobunaga to commit Seppuku.
Yasuke then joined and assisted Nobunaga’s son at Nijo Castle.
Mitsuhide defeated them as well but claimed to have sent Yasuke to Kyoto’s Jesuit Church.
We are not sure if Yasuke survived as there were no more historical records about Yasuke after that day.
