Eimi Wakui|A. Dvořák: Mazurek, op.49

This piece for violin and piano was composed in 1880.
It is based on the mazurka, a folk dance, and is characterised by its passionate, rhythmic melody.
The mazurka is a dance widely performed in Poland and Slavic countries, with the accent on the second beat of the three beats.
The work is in one movement, but in three parts, with the violin playing the mazurka theme strongly in the opening section. In the middle section, a quiet, lyrical theme appears, to which the piano responds dialogically.
In the recapitulation section, the first theme returns, and the piece concludes with a spectacular coda.
This is the last violin work Dvořák wrote before leaving for America and is a masterpiece of his folkloric musicality.

Piano: Mari Kato
