Ysaÿe’s Sonata for Solo Violin was inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s sonata for solo violin in G minor played by the famous Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti.
The composer, Eugène-Auguste Ysaÿe (1858-1931), was a great violinist, composer, teacher and conductor from Belgium.
The six works are composed in detail to enable the performer to push the technical limits while still producing emotionally rich music.
He also used prominent characteristics of early 20th century music, such as whole tone scales and dissonances, making his violin works representative of the evolution of musical technique and expression in his time.
Each piece is dedicated to a renowned violinist, with No. 3 dedicated to the Romanian violinist and composer George Enescu.
This single-movement work, is the most frequently performed of the six pieces.
