Hot on the heels of the launch of the first biography of the legendary African Samurai, Yasuke (African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan) was the announcement of Chadwick Boseman’s agreement to play the role of the black samurai in an upcoming feature film. The announcement caused an online frenzy, not unlike the stir that Yasuke caused whenever he was seen in public in 16th century Japan.

But who is this black Samurai who lived some 450+ years ago? Was there really a black Samurai? To some he’s a legend, while for others he’s either a mystery or a myth. In this video, we sat down with Thomas Lockley, one half of the duo who wrote the vivid biography of the black samurai; putting the skeptics to rest once and for all, about what was fact and what was fiction about the first foreign born samurai. We asked Lockley about what inspired him to write the biography, along with a battery of other questions. This was the resulting interview.
