Tchaikovsky: Valse-Scherzo in C major, Op.34|Eimi Wakui
The Waltz-Scherzo was composed by Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) in 1877. The original work is for violin and orchestra, but the piano accompaniment version is also frequently performed. It was written two years after “Melancholy Serenade” and the year before the Violin Concerto, so it is a work from the period when Tchaikovsky was at the height of his creativity for violin music.
The graceful melody of the waltz is interspersed with slur staccato and other violin virtuosity techniques. The highlight of this piece is to see if the violinist can play the surging virtuosity with a cool and graceful face!
