A 15,000-seat swimming venue for the Olympic Games in Japan next year was opened on October 24, 2020. The US$542 million Aquatics Centre in Tokyo was completed in February, but its grand opening ceremony scheduled for March was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Japanese officials say they are determined to stage the global event safely in July 2021, one year after it was originally supposed to take place, with infection control measures for spectators and certain restrictions for Olympic athletes.
