First COVID-19 case confirmed inside Olympic athletes’ village in Tokyo

Tokyo 2020 organisers confirmed on Saturday the first positive COVID-19 case of the Olympics has been detected in the athletes’ village.

The patient has been identified as an official who is not a Japanese resident.

The athletes’ village will be home to 11,000 athletes and officials over the next three and a half weeks.

Japanese authorities were quick to announce the case had been transported to a facility where they will have to isolate for the next 14 days.

This takes the total number of cases connected to the Olympic games to more than 40 even before the games have officially begun.

Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto said inside the village the organisation is conducting “complete COVID management” and have taken “various measures to ensure safety and security” in the athletes’ village.
