About a year after they were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics officially kicked off on Friday with opening ceremonies, which saw a pared-down event with a vastly smaller number of athletes from participating countries taking to the field but stunning fireworks still lit up the sky to try and bring the world together.

It also marks the official first day of events in the Games — though several non-medal games have been played in the past few days — with both beach and hard court volleyball, women’s tennis and a medal event for the men’s road race in cycling.

As Crystal Goomansingh explains, the Games are like no other, with most athletes flying in only five days before their respective events and sticking to their bubbles, but it’s no less important to those in Team Canada wearing the maple leaf.
