The dome is a silent witness to the enormity of the Aceh tsunami. Before the disaster occurred, the dome was located above the old mosque in Lam Teungoh Village, Peukan Bada District, Aceh Besar
On Sunday, December 26, 2004, Peukan Bada residents were doing their normal activities. Suddenly the earth shook violently. People panic. Not long ago, people saw a giant wave began to sweep the shoreline. The location of Lam Teungoh Village with the sea is only about three kilometers.
Some residents fled to the mosque or climbed onto the dome. When the second wave came, the dome of the Lam Teungoh mosque was separated from its main building. The dome was carried by tsunami waves as high as 7 meters to the bottom of the mountains. When the water receded, the dome was stranded in the middle of the rice fields of residents in Gurah Village, Aceh Besar. The distance from the original building to the end point is about 2.5 kilometers.
